Default settings on Microsoft systems often open up many doors for malicious hackers by automatically enabling functions and services, often without the user's knowledge. In fact, default installations of operating systems and applications are listed as the top security vulnerability on the SANS/FBI top twenty list.

The Buck Stops Where?

This editorial argues that while secure software products, better default installations and an easier patching system would be desirable, it is not enough to simply complain about these problems. On the contrary, the responsibility for security ultimately rests with system administrators who have to keep up-to-date with security advisories, patches and updates, according to the author.
